How to Prepare for Your Engagement Photoshoot

If you’re reading this - congratulations on your engagement!! Your engagement is one of the most exciting chapters in your life, and capturing this moment with an engagement photoshoot is the perfect way to celebrate your love story. I believe engagement shoots should feel authentic and meaningful, showcasing your unique love and shared interests. Whether we choose a stunning location to simply let the magic happen or design a session around something you both love to do, here are some tips to help you prepare for your session.

Step 1: Choose Your Photoshoot Style

1. Find a Beautiful Location and Shoot Away

For couples who want timeless, romantic images, choosing a beautiful location sets the stage for effortless moments. Whether it’s a lush forest, a scenic waterfront, or a charming downtown spot, the natural beauty of your surroundings will elevate your photos. If you’re unsure where to go, I’m happy to suggest some of my favourite locations that complement the season and your vision.

2. Center Your Shoot Around a Shared Passion

If you want photos that feel uniquely "you," consider an activity-based shoot centered on something you both love. From sipping coffee at your favorite café to strumming a guitar on a lazy Sunday, this approach makes your session a fun and meaningful experience. Other creative ideas include canoeing on a peaceful lake, painting together, or even recreating your first date. I typically recommend this style of engagement shoot if the couple has never had a photoshoot before and are feeling nervous about getting in front of the camera. Shooting in an environment you and your partner are comfortable in will help lower nerves. :)

Step 2: Select Seasonal Outfits

What you wear plays a big role in how your photos feel and look. Here’s some seasonal inspiration to help you decide:

Spring

  • Outfit Ideas: Soft pastels, floral prints, and lightweight layers work beautifully. Consider a flowy dress for her and a button-up shirt with neutral chinos for him.

  • Props: A bouquet of fresh flowers, a picnic blanket, or a vintage bike can add whimsical touches… and champaign. ;)

Summer

  • Outfit Ideas: Bright colours, airy fabrics, and relaxed styles are perfect. For her, a sundress or romper; for him, a linen shirt and rolled-up khakis.

  • Props: Sunglasses, a straw hat, a basket of summer fruit, or even a beach towel if we’re near water…and champaign.

Fall

  • Outfit Ideas: Warm tones like burgundy, mustard, and olive green make for stunning fall photos. She could wear a cozy knit sweater with boots, and he might go for a plaid shirt and dark jeans.

  • Props: A plaid blanket, a pumpkin, or steaming mugs of coffee or cider are perfect seasonal accents… and can’t forget champaign!

Winter

  • Outfit Ideas: Think chic and cozy! Layer up with scarves, pea coats, and gloves. For her, a long coat and stylish boots; for him, a tailored wool jacket and scarf.

  • Props: String lights, outdoor fire, snow, or even a thermos of hot chocolate can create a magical winter vibe… perhaps paired with and champaign. hehe

Step 3: Incorporate Personal Props

To make your photos even more meaningful, think about props that tell your story. These could be simple, such as:

  • Instruments: Highlight your shared love of music with a guitar or piano.

  • Blanket + Pillows: For cozy picnic vibes.

  • Hobbies: Whether it’s painting supplies or a chessboard, props tied to your interests make your session unique.

  • Pets: If you have a furry friend, bring them along for some adorable family shots!

Step 4: Prepare for the Day

  • Rest and Hydrate: A good night’s sleep and staying hydrated ensure you look and feel your best.

  • Hair and Makeup: Consider scheduling a hair and makeup appointment for a polished yet natural look. *Sometimes people will schedule their makeup trial the same day as the engagement shoot to test how the makeup photographs.

  • Outfits: Lay out your clothing the night before, making sure everything is clean, wrinkle-free, and ready to go.

  • Bring Essentials: Pack extras like a pair of comfortable shoes, touch-up makeup, and water bottles. If we’re shooting outdoors, sunscreen or bug spray might also be helpful.

Step 5: Trust the Process

The best engagement photos happen when you’re relaxed and enjoying the moment. Focus on each other, and let me handle the rest. My goal is to create a fun and stress-free experience where your genuine connection shines through. If you’re nervous about being in front of the camera, don’t worry—I’ll guide you through poses and prompts that feel natural and easy. If I were to have a dollar for every time I had a couple tell me “ I hate having my photo taken” or “I’m so awkward in front of a camera”… I would own a tropical island. It is my job to set your nerves at ease. It is my job to pose you and your partner naturally and give every shot that effortless look while highlighting your love for each other.

Final Thoughts

Your engagement photos are about more than just documenting this special time—they’re about telling your story. Whether we’re chasing golden hour light at a stunning location or capturing your joy during an activity you both love, we’ll create memories you’ll treasure forever.

Ready to plan your session? I can’t wait to help you celebrate this beautiful milestone in your journey together.
