A Playful, Cozy Anniversary Session at Birchwood Luxury Camping

Some sessions feel like they’re meant to be from the very first message, and Emilie’s was exactly that.

When she reached out about a possible add-on experience during their stay at Birchwood Luxury Camping in Port Perry, I knew right away this wasn’t going to be your typical session. It was just the two of them. No big event. No timeline pressure. Just a quiet, intentional moment carved out to celebrate their relationship in a way that felt completely them.

And honestly… those are always my favourite. :)

From the beginning, Emilie described their dynamic as “hang out and be silly”, and that energy shaped everything. She mentioned they can feel a little awkward in front of the camera (which, truly, most people do), but they had such a great experience during their engagement session that they wanted to recreate that same feeling—comfortable, fun, and a little bit unexpected.

She also added one very important detail:

“I have a few ideas… if you’re okay with me coming with a few things up my sleeve.”

I was immediately in.

Leaning Into the Fun (and the Weird—in the Best Way)

What I loved most about this session is how unapologetically them it was.

We started in the woods, surrounded by the quiet stillness of late November. The trees were bare, the light soft, and the air had that crisp, cozy feeling that makes you want to stay close to each other. And then… the bear masks came out.

And somehow, it made perfect sense.

There’s something really special about couples who are willing to lean into play. To not take themselves too seriously. To create moments that feel more like memories than poses. Watching them wander through the forest—doing completely normal, everyday things while wearing bear masks—was equal parts hilarious and oddly beautiful.

It broke down any nerves instantly. And from there, everything just flowed.

Cozy, Intimate, and Effortlessly Real

As the sun started to dip closer to the horizon, we shifted into something a little softer.

Wrapped up in blankets, sitting close together, sipping coffee like they had just woken up in their little cabin (or geodome) in the woods…it felt quiet, intimate, and real. These are the moments I’m always drawn to. The in-between ones. The ones that don’t feel staged, but instead feel like a glimpse into their everyday love.

There’s a certain kind of magic in photographing couples this way. Not just how they look, but how they are together.

The way they laugh. The way they settle into each other. The way everything softens when they forget the camera is even there.

Ending in the Most Unexpected Way

And then… we ended the session exactly how you’d hope a session like this would end.

In the hot tub. With swim caps. And goggles.

Because of course we did.

It was playful, a little chaotic, and completely unforgettable. The close-up shots of them in the water, laughing, leaning in, just fully embracing the moment…felt like the perfect ending. Nothing polished. Nothing overly curated. Just two people having fun together.

And honestly, that’s what this session was all about.

Why This Session Matters

Sessions like Emilie’s are such a beautiful reminder that your photos don’t have to look like anyone else’s.

They can be weird.
They can be cozy.
They can be playful, intimate, slightly chaotic, and completely unique to you.

There’s no “right” way to document your relationship—only your way.

And when you lean into that… that’s where the magic happens.

If you’re dreaming up something a little different—whether it’s a quiet moment away, a playful idea you’ve been sitting on, or something completely outside the box—I’m always here for it 🤍

Let’s create something that feels like you.
